In terms of diversification, Zoom recently announced the acquisition of Five9, a leading provider of the intelligent cloud contact centre, in an all-stock transaction valued at approximately $14.7 billion. Zoom needs to, and is, working towards diversifying its business and improving the core one, which is videoconferencing and technological support to distance and remote-working. In addition to many competitors’ (Google, Microsoft, etc.) aggressive presence in the market, globally some restrictions have been lifted, and more activities resume face-to-face interactions. However, Zoom’s stock price growth has started to slow down during 2021 hinting at investor scepticism as to how the company would fare in a return to normality. Zoom has been “powering” the world: Zoom traffic rocketed up to 3,000% in May 2020. In 2020 its market cap reached about $106.7 billion. Just two years ago, the company was valued at almost $16 billion. Zoom revenues rose 326% in 2020 and its stock surged over 600%. From a 100% enterprise-focused communication company to – using the words of its CEO and founder Eric Yuan – a “world infrastructure company”, the story of Zoom’s rise is a truly fascinating one.
